Description
Rev. Angela Palacious holds a special place in the annals of Bahamian history as well as the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas/Turks and Caicos Islands, as the first female ordained to the position of Deacon in 1999, and then Priest in 2000. A devoted wife and mother to Archdeacon James Palacious and son Carlos respectively, Rev Palacious is also a regular columnist in the Tribune newspaper, an acclaimed author of several books and audio tapes, and serves as the chaplain of the nation’s Anglican Hospital
Interesting Fact: I found out as a young teenager that Rev Palacious is actually allergic to the incense traditionally burned in the crucibles used in church services- oops!
---
Artist’s Notes: Another late entry thanks to my waking up at 4pm! Double oops!
I believe that my first exposure to the world of gender inequality/ the idea of feminism was through the news of Rev Palacious’ ordination. I say this not to suggest that she had a vicious uphill struggle to fight to be ordained - I don’t recall such a thing being mentioned in any articles [but then again, i was 10 or 11 when it happened], but I DID distinctly remember raising an eyebrow at the idea that this was newsworthy because she was ‘the 1st’. Naive me, I didn’t think it mattered!
Those who know me well enough know that I have not been shy about my upbringing in an Anglican Church- and my subsequent growing apart from that section of my life by the time I hit my teens. Despite my current apathetic views on religion in general, I retain an unwavering fondness for the figures in my life from that undeniably simpler time- and this very much includes the Palacious family. Thus, Rev Palacious’ inclusion in #FemiNoir was again, easy.
This time artistically I tried for a quick approach of working with soft grays and just blocking out areas of light and shadow. It’s probably not as accurate as I’d like, but it was worth experimenting with- and I think it suits her. Gave her a small little crucifix earring because anything else would be far too overbearing.
